Master password

A master password provides an additional level of security for your passwords. The app will request it during an attempt to open password storage or enter a previously saved website password in a login form.

Instead of a huge number of passwords from different websites, you will have to remember only one master password. Passwords from websites will also be more secure. Access to the vault is locked by the master password, which cannot be stolen because it's not stored on devices.

Create a master password

  1. Tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Tap Create master password.
  4. Enter the master password. We recommend using passwords that are complex but easy to remember.
  5. Tap Continue. To confirm, enter the password again and tap Create master password.

Deleting a master password

  1. Tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Tap Delete master password.
  4. Enter your current master password and tap Confirm.

Time until the vault is locked

You can configure the time interval after which the browser blocks your password vault and requests a master password when someone is trying to access it:

  1. Tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Tap Access control.
  4. Under Lock access, select one of the following: After restart, After lock screen, or Never.
  5. If necessary, enter your master password to access the storage.

If you forgot your master password

If you have created a backup encryption key:

  1. On the screen for entering your master password, tap I forgot my password.
  2. Tap Reset master password.
  3. Enter the password from your Yandex ID.
  4. Create a new master password.

If you haven't created a backup encryption key, you can't restore access to your passwords.

Backup encryption key

The master password provides more secure password protection, but what do you do if you forget it? Yandex Browser has a convenient and secure way to reset the master password.

The only function of the master password is to decrypt the encrypted key, so if you have a backup encryption key, you can extract it and encrypt it with a new master password.

Some password managers suggest that users store their backup encryption key (sometimes as a QR code) as a printout. This method isn't secure enough, because you may lose the printout or it may get stolen. This is why we store your backup encryption key on your device and encrypt it with another key stored on the server. You can access the key on the server only after entering the password from your Yandex ID. Hackers are unlikely to steal the backup encryption key from your device, the key from the server, and the password from your Yandex ID at the same time.

If you have forgotten your master password, you can restore the passwords only if you have a backup encryption key. To create it, use syncing.

To reset the master password, you need both a backup key and a special file. This file is created automatically when you enter your master password for the first time, and is stored locally. This is why even Yandex can't decrypt your passwords.

When restoring access, you need to enter the password from your Yandex ID. Hackers are unlikely to steal the key from the server, the file from your device, and the password from your Yandex ID at the same time.

To create a backup encryption key, tap Enable on the screen that appears after you create a master password. If your device hasn't synced, enable syncing by entering the password from your Yandex ID.

Syncing passwords

You can sync passwords that you saved in Yandex Start and Yandex Browser on your computers, phones, and tablets. During the syncing process, an encrypted copy of your password vault is sent to the Yandex server and then passed on to your other synced devices. Passwords from your other devices are simultaneously added to the vault on your current device.

By default, password syncing is enabled automatically when syncing is enabled. Password syncing is disabled if syncing is completely disabled. To disable only password syncing:

  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Tap Syncing.
  3. Disable Passwords.

Disabling the password manager

Note

Even if you disable the password manager on your current device, it remains enabled on your other devices.

  1. Tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Turn off Password manager.

The app won't save passwords and autofill them in authorization forms anymore. Previously entered passwords will be encrypted and saved on the device. They become available again if you re-enable the password manager.

To do this, go to settings and activate the option.
